DOI: 10.13187/hhct.2017.1.4CrossRef

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the manuscript of the well-known Cossacks statistics N.I. Krasnov which is currently published only in part and stored in Russian state military and historical archive. The author analyzes the history of its creation and some of the features of the text. The article shows that “Thoughts on being profitable for the state in the financial relation of the system of contributing irregular troops by special population groups, enjoying for this military service exemptions and privileges” were the last attempt high "progressives" to persuade the Ministry of War to the demilitarization of the Cossacks. N.I. Krasnov thinks that Cossack troops economically inefficient institution even before writing this text, and in their study defended a similar view. Besides the result of the our study is the conclusion that this manuscript of N.I. Krasnov marked the beginning of the creative period of the author which was characterized by a diversity of subjects and a preference for small forms.

Genesis the Specifics of the Islamization the North Caucasus

History and Historians in the Context of the Time, 2017, 15(1): 23-29.
DOI: 10.13187/hhct.2017.1.23CrossRef

Abstract:
The problem of the Genesis and subsequent development of Islam in a particular ethnically complex region, which is the North Caucasus, still remains unexplored. In Russian historical science in the Caucasus are wonderfully tenacious and almost not remeasured standards developed in the Soviet era, according to which Islam penetrates to the Caucasus very late (almost in the century XVIII), and this procedure is a rather negative for the people's culture, rather than a positive direction. Therefore, the author departs from the existing dies and considers the problem from the standpoint of objectivity, consistency and historicism. The chronological scope of the article is conventional and is motivated by the fact that the initial penetration of Islam in the North Caucasus dates back to the VII century, when the Arabs invaded Dagestan, the upper limit of work consists of century XIX, when fully completed, the adoption of this religion mountain peoples and Islam in its various sects firmly established in the North Caucasus. The author comes to the conclusion that the process of Islamisation of the mountain peoples of the North Caucasus region was due to the prevailing political situation in the region and outside it; the Islamic faith in the North Caucasus had never had their own roots, and was brought in from outside, alien conquerors; the degree of illisionist the mountain peoples was different: in the Eastern parts of the Caucasus (Chechnya, Ingushetia, Dagestan) Islam deeply penetrated into the consciousness of the people, in their behavioral norms than in Western (Kabarda, Cherkessia, Adygea).

Kurdistan and the "Kurdish Issue" in the "Oriental Policy" of Russia

History and Historians in the Context of the Time, 2017, 15(1): 49-60.
DOI: 10.13187/hhct.2017.1.49CrossRef

Abstract:
Since the two Moslem countries – Ottoman Turkey and Qajar Iran – had lost their wars to Russian empire, their adjacent provinces, especially Kurdistan became an object of keen interest of their northern neighbor. According to the calculations, made by the Russian political and military figures at the end of XIX – beginning of XX c., Kurdistan could play a role of the bridgehead in the future military campaigns. That is why close to the World War I, the Staff of the Caucasian military district had intensified his exploration of the Kurdistan region, meanwhile looking for a way how to resolve the so-called "Kurdish issue". As the best illustration of the Russian approach how the military circles looked at the problem of Kurdistan, and accordingly to the "Kurdish issue", could be considered "A Short Note on How to Rule over the Kurds, and regarding the Needs of the Russian Kurds" of the Russian Intelligence officer, Staff-Captain K.N. Smirnov. The note was composed by him at the very beginning of the WWI, on 14 December, 1914.
